Basic MacOS proficiency will not at like 90% of places. My last info was from like October of last year.īasic proficiency with Linux will help you get a job in pretty much any IT environment. I don't even think GPU acceleration works at all right now, but I could be mistaken. You're still going to be editing config files to get those services running on a Mac.ĭon't expect to be able to run Linux on an M1 device without lots of broken hardware because of lack of drivers.
MAC MINI SERVER MAIL SERVER UPDATE
No way would I buy any Mac product to use as a server, and if I did they surely wouldn't be running MacOS with it's OS updates that take like 20 minutes (when everyone else can update an OS and reboot in like 3 minutes). I understand that Linux will be used far more than macOS, but will the returns of experience with Linux necessarily help picking up a job? (Keep in mind that this is second priority the first priority would be ensuring maximum uptime of the services on the server as possible.)ĭo you guys have any advice on which one to pick? I'm torn between the two options as of right now. However, if I build my own server, I get the additional benefits of possibly virtualizing some images on my server.Īnother issue would be the problem of which OS would be advantageous - I am thinking about picking up a job in CS/IT in the future (in high school right now). If I buy a Mac Mini, I get the additional benefits of the Apple ecosystem, macOS (which I am accustomed to), and OS update caching. Remote Browser / Remote OS (for emergency situations where I might not have access to a computer)Īs far as I know, all of these can be accomplished on both platforms, which leaves me stuck as to which one to choose. My current plan would be to set up the following on my server (nothing particularly heavy): I am currently leaning towards the M1 Mac Mini because I like the ease of configuring everything - there is no need to mess around with configuration files like I would have to on Linux. The price that I have calculated are similar to each other ($700-$750 range), so I don't think that price is a concern. Currently, I am trying to decide between purchasing a baseline M1 Mac Mini or building a server and running some server Linux distribution on it (such as Debian or Ubuntu).
